Superb charity ball huge success

Local hair salon group, Shear Success is celebrating after hitting its target to raise £15,000 for the Prince’s Trust charity with a charity ball and auction in January (11Jan). Cajoled by snooker champ and compere, Willy Thorne, the 350 glamorously-dressed guests dug deep in their pockets during an auction of fantastic prizes , all donated by local businesses. One anonymous diner stumped up £1,000 for a signed Aston Villa shirt, while another paid out £1,600 for 10 days at a villa in Florida. A Shear Success fan paid £500 for a year’s free hairdressing at one of the salons.

Owners Angela Gough and Maureen Young had aimed to raise £15,000 – ten times the amount the charity gave them in 1987 to start their first salon – and the generosity and enthusiasm of guest on the night and the companies who donated prizes, allowed them to hit their ambitious target.

"I'm so thrilled" said Angela. "Our guests were incredibly generous."

The ball was held in the stunning marquee of Aston Wood golf club, which had a black and white theme, including dress code. Live music was provided by local stars, Project 21, featuring singing sensation, Fabian, who has just been signed by a top America label.

Twenty years ago, last December, Angela and Maureen were given a helping hand by the Prince’s Trust, a charity set up to help young people become successful entrepreneurs. Now, two decades later, they are successful businesswomen, owners of Shear Success, an upmarket salon group in the Midlands, determined to repay the charity.

"At a time when no bank would help us, the Prince's Trust gave us £1,500 to open our first salon. We now have two very busy salons in Tamworth and Four Oaks, and we wanted to pay the Trust back, and more," says Angela. "We aimed to give back to the Trust £1,500, but then add another 0 to it, to take it to £15,000, and thanks to the generosity of guests we are able to do that."

Rika Meynell, area manager for the Prince’s Trust in Staffordshire, guest of honour at the event, was blown away by the night.

"I must say it was the best ball I’ve ever been to and for Angela and Maureen to raise so much is fantastic. They did an amazing job," she said. "This money will allow me to help so many more young people."

Other amounts raised included £575 for a diamond necklace and £400 for a teeth whitening session, while the raffle brought it £3,000; a diamond in the Champagne, £663; table games £620 and the tombola £275.
